Spotlight on J. Alexis Shriver for Stewardship

In 2023, the Harford Historical Society is spearheading Harford 250, a year-long celebration of the county's sestercentennial. As a Bel-Air based Wealth Management firm that celebrated our own 25th anniversary last year, The Kelly Group takes pride in our county's storied history. Each month this year, we will recognize a historical figure whom we believe personifies a value or virtue that helps define the cultures of both The Kelly Group and Harford County. This month we spotlight J. Alexis Shriver for stewardship.

From the time he began tending to the historic 264-acre Olney farm he moved to in 1890, J Alexis Shriver made it his life's work to also tend to Harford County's history. Born in 1872, he served as an officer of the Society for more than half of his 55 years, much of the time keeping the organization alive almost single-handedly. A small sample of his extensive activities in preserving and documenting this area's history include authoring a book on George Washington's 127 trips through Maryland and organizing the 1931 Lafayette Sesquicentennial celebration at the site of Lafayette's Revolutionary War Camp at the Rigbie Farm in Darlington. When you run across one of those roadside plaques describing the historic significance of a site or building, think of Shriver; he was instrumental in originating the Maryland Roadside Marker Project that continues to this day.

A passion for history inspired J. Alexis Shriver to serve as steward of Harford County's past, a gift of incalculable value to the future. Similarly, The Kelly Group's passion for helping individuals, families, and business owners to flourish inspires us to serve as stewards of our clients' financial goals and dreams for generations to come.
